KOTA KINABALU: A medical team ferrying a patient to a health facility in an ambulance were fortunate not to end up in hospital themselves after it rammed into a herd of cows in Kota Belud.
A doctor and a nurse were escorting the patient, who was also accompanied by a relative, from Hospital Kudat in north Sabah to another hospital in the state capital when the incident occurred at 4am on Friday (June 17).
Kota Belud OCPD Supt Shahrudin Mat Husain said the ambulance was passing through Jalan Kota Belud – Kota Marudu when the cows suddenly darted across the road.
“The ambulance driver could not avoid hitting the cows,” he said when contacted.
Fortunately, he said, the five people in the ambulance, which sustained substantial damage to its front, did not suffer any injuries.
“The cows, however, were not so lucky as all four died due to the impact.
“No one has come forward to claim the dead animals yet,” he said. He also advised motorists using the route to be extra careful of livestock roaming in the area.
Supt Shahrudin added that the incident was being investigated under Rule 10 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959.
