KUALA LUMPUR – The national badminton champion Datuk Lee Chong Wei won the Best Male Player of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) for the fifth time last night.
Chong Wei received the award from BWF deputy president, Gustavo Salazar in a Gala Dinner in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), the result of his excellent performance this season.
He set aside some candidate countries which also includes a pair of Olympic silver medalist, Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong, Olympic champion Chen Long, China doubles, Fu Haifeng, Zhang Nan and Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark.
Throughout 2016, Chong Wei won the Super Series in Malaysia, Indonesia and Japan, as well as three Olympic silver medals, in addition to trying to hunt down his fifth title of World Super Series in Dubai this week.
For the record, the 34-year-old from Penang won the same award in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013.
