KANGAR: Media practitioners need to continue defending professional journalism so that the information delivered benefits people and the country, says Perlis Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azlan Man (pic).

He said fake news could create problems for the community and give negative effects to many parties.

“So the danger of disseminating unverified news would lead to people making evaluations based on what they have read,” he told reporters after officiating the Perlis-level National Journalists Day (Hawana) 2022 here on Monday (June 13).

Also present were state information technology and communications committee chairman Rozieana Ahmad and Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) acting chief executive officer Roslan Ariffin and acting Bernama deputy editor-in-chief, Harlina Samson.

Roslan meanwhile thanked the Perlis Journalists Association (PWP) for successfully organising the event with the state government and hoped it would be emulated by journalist associations in other states.

“Who else wants to celebrate journalists if not journalists themselves,” he added.

Earlier in the ceremony, the late Adnan Yahaya who was the former Bernama photo desk editor and also former Perlis bureau chief was named as the Perlis Journalist.

Adnan was represented by his widow Hasnah Hashim who received an appreciation certificate and RM500 cash donated by E-Idaman Sdn Bhd presented by Azlan.

In conjunction with the 2022 Perlis-level Hawana, the Perlis Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (Maips) organised a forum with PWP entitled ‘Amanah Menyampaikan Berita’ at Tuanku Syed Faizuddin mosque tonight.

Apart from that, Maips also organised a bicycle riding programme which was participated by the Raja Muda of Perlis Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail and Perlis media practitioners. – Bernama
