Kuala Lumpur – Despite high hopes when they host the 2017 Games, but the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) provides an exception to the Rio Olympics medalist from competing in the biennial event to enable them to play at the World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland.
BAM technical director Morten Frost Hansen said, Datuk Lee Chong Wei (men’s singles), Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong (men’s doubles) and Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying (mixed doubles) and a player who inhabit ranking the top eight would not participate in the SEA Games.
“We’ve made a decision on the matter and the Rio Olympic Games medalists will compete with them in Glasgow, ranked eight in the world,” he said.
Previously, the selection of players who will play in the World Championship and the SEA Games has become a buzzword as both the prestigious event will take place at the same time, August next year.
Southeast Asia’s biggest sporting event will be held on 19 to 31 August, while the World Championships will kick-off on August 21 to 27
The World Championships will also be the last performance for the world’s No.1 player, Chong Wei for his first title.
