A day after Ukraine ordered its troops to withdraw from the key eastern city of Severodonetsk, its forces continued to defend nearby Lysychansk in the war for control of Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region.

Ukrainian military units have sought to occupy higher ground in Lysychansk, which sits across the Siverskyi Donets River from Severodonetsk and is about the same size, in a bid to repel Russian attacks as they try to avoid becoming surrounded.
